“Excellent organisation. Hotels were of an excellent standard.”

the crew were all outstanding and couldn't have been more helpful
DAY 1
I flew from London City Airport to Luxembourg on the 14th July, then took a taxi from the airport to the port of Remich where the 'Avalon Luminary' was docked. I was shown to my Category P Stateroom, which was spotless and in a quiet position on the Royal Deck.

Surprisingly the ship only had 86 passengers on-board for this particular sailing, most of all had already spent 2 pre- nights in Paris. Two hours after boarding, a standard fire drill took place which all went smoothly. I then introduced myself to Karolien, the Cruise Director, who was charming and extremely helpful. She gave a welcome talk just before dinner which outlined the forthcoming itinerary.

At dinner, there were some empty tables in the restaurant due to the cruise not being full but there was still a good atmosphere, and as expected the waiting staff very very helpful and attentive. After dinner, the resident pianist Stefan was playing in the Lounge but it had been a long day so I retired to my Stateroom and had an early night!

DAY 2

It was quite an early start today as our included tour of Trier (the oldest town in Germany) started at 8.30am. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great but the town was very picturesque and very historic so it was an interesting place to see and the local guide was excellent. As we had arrived there so early the shops were all shut and it had the appearance of a 'Ghost town', although as we were leaving quite a few tourists seemed to be arriving, it is obviously a popular place to visit.

We went back to the ship and set sail for Bernkastel, where we arrived at 5pm. By this time the weather had improved so a few of us walked into the town independently. The town was very popular with tourists and there were many bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. Landshut Castle on the top of the hill was particularly spectacular when it was lit up at night. On board the ship there was a singing duo called 'Tom and Jerry', who took requests from passengers!

DAY 3

We had an included walking tour of Cochem, culminating in a visit to Reichsburg Castle, from where there were spectacular views of Cochem below. We boarded the ship again at 11.45am for an afternoon sailing to Coblenz along the Moselle River. After lunch there was an optional tour of the ship's Galley. This was quite popular and had to be
split into two groups. It was interesting to see how little space all the kitchen staff have in which to prepare meals for 130 passengers plus crew!

We arrived into Coblenz at 6pm and were docked approximately 20 minutes walk from the town centre so we had the option to explore if we wanted to. The on-board entertainment that evening was a string trio, who proved very popular.

DAY 4

This morning was spent sailing along the Rhine Gorge. The cruise director gave a very informative commentary, we passed the famous statue of Lorelei as well as several vineyards and castles, the scenery was spectacular!
The chef prepared a special 'German lunch' which really was outstanding, there was a huge variety of German foods on offer and all the waiting staff dressed in local costume, which really created a vibrant atmosphere in the restaurant.

We arrived in Rudesheim shortly after lunch and were transferred by a small train to the town centre. I think this was my favourite town, it was quite hilly but the views were tremendous and there was something for everybody here. We all visited 'Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum' which contains several very old musical instruments and were shown round by a very eccentric guide. We then went to a local cafe to taste the 'Rudesheim coffee' (very potent!), whilst a string quartet played in the background! We then had free time to wander around the town, I took the cable car which gave spectacular views over the town, well worth doing! We boarded the ship again at 5.30pm for an overnight sailing. The on-board entertainment was 'Movie Night' where 'The King's Speech' was shown in the Club Lounge and included popcorn!

DAY 5

Again we sailed all morning, this time along the Main River. Karolien. We arrived in Miltenberg at lunchtime and again had an included tour of the town. This was a pretty town and consisted of one long main street. The local guide we had was excellent and provided a lot of information. There were many shops and bars so the time here passed very quickly. Once we got back to the ship there was a baking demonstration on almond cookies which proved to be very humorous as it was provided by a local very glamorous ex-nun and involved audience participation. After dinner that night, the on-board entertainment was 'The Crew Show' which was very funny and proved how versatile the crew really are!

DAY 6
This morning we sailed towards Wurzburg. To keep us entertained there was a Zither player on-board.. After lunch we were transferred by coach into Wurzburg and given a guided tour of the Palace (Bishop's Residenz). We then had free time to explore the town which had an interesting market and many shops. We rejoined the ship at 5.15pm to set sail, and that evening we had the Captain's Farewell Cocktail Party and Dinner. Happy Hour was later tonight between 9pm and 10pm, which proved to be quite popular!

DAY 7

Again, a morning sailing along the Main. A talk about the European Union was given on-board by an outside speaker to keep everyone occupied. After lunch we were transferred by coach to Bamberg just as the heavens opened! This was a very historic town and we were given a short tour of the Cathedral and then left to our own devices. This town wasn't as picturesque as the other places we had visited, it had a more conventional feel to it and was my least favourite. We boarded the ship at 6.15 pm and had our last dinner on-board the Luminary. The entertainment was a 'Swing band' and as this was everybody's last night together the Lounge was very busy, a lot of drinking and dancing done by all!

DAY8

Unfortunately I was the first person to leave the ship as I was had to leave in Nuremberg.
On arrival the driver was waiting in the Arrivals Hall to take me home, very efficient service, comfortable vehicle.

OVERVIEW

I thoroughly enjoyed my cruise, my fellow passengers were a really friendly bunch, and even the cruise director said that there was an exceptional atmosphere on-board. On this particular cruise, there were no optional excursions, they were all included which most passengers found quite refreshing. As expected, the ship was immaculate, the crew were all outstanding and couldn't have been more helpful and the food was incredible. Karolien was a most entertaining Cruise Director and really contributed to the vibrant atmosphere on-board. A variety of films can now be viewed in your Stateroom (free of charge) and there is also a variety of music to listen to as well. All in all I had a fantastic week.
