Belgrade Serbia

Serbia River Cruises

One of the ten countries that the Danube River flows through is Serbia. Located at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, it has a total area of 34,116 sq miles and covers the southern part of the Carpathian Basin and the central part of the Balkans. Its neighbours include Hungary to the north; Romania and Bulgaria to the east; the Republic of Macedonia to the south; and Bosnia, Herzegovina and Montenegro to the west. Serbia is a beautiful country with variety of topographical features, from the Pannonian plain and river lowlands to the Balkan and Carpathian mountain ranges. The climate in Serbia can be quite different depending on the region you’re in: the northern climate is fairly continental with relatively cold winters and hot summers, the upland regions have hot, dry summers and cold winters; whereas the mountain regions have heavy snow fall.

Avalon passengers will pass through the magnificent Iron Gates Gorge, which is one, if not the most impressive, sight of the Danube. The Iron Gates Gorge is a narrow Valley that forms part of the border between Romania in the north and Serbia in the south, at the point where the Carpathian Mountains separate from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. Being 60 miles in length it is the biggest gorge in Europe, the breathtaking scenery will leave passengers transfixed. Two of the most striking sections are Mali Kazan and Veliki Kazan, and with dramatic 700 meter high cliffs overhanging the river at some points, it truly is spectacular.

Once through the Iron Gates the capital city of Belgrade is not far. Situated at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, Belgrade is the largest city in Serbia and with a population of 1.6 million it is one of the largest in Europe. The city has many interesting landmarks including Kalemegdan Fortress; St Sava, the world’s largest Orthodox Church; and the tomb and monument of Marshal Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. The Kalemegdan Fortress was once an important military fortification, but today it is a central park in Belgrade abundant with cafés, tennis and basketball courts and museums. It is also a host to many art and cultural events throughout the summer. Passengers will be able to view the mighty structure that is the St Sava Cathedral, renowned for being the largest church building in the Balkans and one of the tenth largest church buildings in the world. The Cathedral dominates the cityscape although it is still not fully completed. Avalon passengers will have access to the north aisle, where from the glorious white marble and superb plasterwork passengers will gain an insight into what the stupendous monument will look like once completed.
