The Legendary Danube

From Prague to vibrant Budapest, this Danube river cruise holiday takes you to four countries. And the scenic beauty along the way as you cruise past quaint towns can be experienced right from your stateroom or while sipping wine atop the Sky Deck of your ship. Enjoy two nights in Prague, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Stand in front of Old Town’s medieval Astronomical Clock, which amazes as an intricate art piece and visualisation of time unlike anything else in the world. Travel to Nuremberg, Germany, to board your river cruise vessel docked on the Main Danube Canal and visit this thousand-year-old city with a Local Guide. Next, reach Regensburg, the only German city not bombed during WWII. Lovers of architecture will enjoy the many listed buildings of historic interest, and Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 CE. Passau, known for its narrow, winding streets, offers the magnificent Italian Baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In Melk, you will visit Austria’s majestic Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe’s largest monasteries, which sits high on a bluff. Take in the breathtaking views before continuing through the picturesque Wachau Valley to the romantic sounds of Vienna, the “City of Music.” Your European river cruise holiday ends in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, with guided sightseeing and free time to explore this vibrant city on your own.

Itinerary

Multiple itineraries are available:

Day 1 Prague

Travel to Prague where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a three night stay at the Intercontinental Prague, Hilton Prague or Andel's by Vienna House Prague (or similar).

Day 2 Prague

  • Meals included:
  • Breakfast

Included today: Guided sightseeing, see the Astronomical Clock and visit Hradcany Castle grounds.  Prague is a 1,200-year-old city preserved in time, and, unlike other Central European capitals, it was not bombed during the 20th-century wars. A local guide shows you its best-known treasures, such as the Old Town’s Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 and once the envy of all of Europe; Hradcany Castle grounds; St. Vitus Cathedral; and the Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague. Browse the shops for hand-cut crystal or art books and stroll through the Christmas markets. Rows of brightly decorated wooden huts sell Christmas tree ornaments, wooden toys, and Czech handicrafts. Get a little inner warmth with a cup of svarene vino (hot mulled wine) and a traditional hot sausage from one of the stalls. The beautifully decorated tree in the Old Town is an impressive sight.

Day 3 Prague

  • Meals included:
  • Breakfast

Enjoy a free day to explore at your own pace and visit the Christmas markets. Perhaps visit the Communist Museum, sample local plum dumplings and Pilsner, or stroll along the Vltava River. Your Cruise Director will have suggestions for things to do.

"A wonderful experience on the Danube"

30th July 2018 - Trusted Customer

I rang Avalon and booked over the phone. They were helpful and it was quick and easy.

Even though we missed Nuremberg due to the low water levels in the Danube, we enjoyed the time in Passau and Linz, the latter was a bonus. We loved the slow walker tours and also the flexibility that we didn't have to take the tours if we didn't want to. The opportunity of cruising during the day time seeing the river was also brilliant.

25th June 2018 - Mrs Frances Capel

The way the whole trip was organised without being intrusive was great. The crew onboard were exceptionally friendly, efficient and obviously well trained. The excursions included had great local guides. My only slight disappointed, was that i thought the bar drinks were far too expensive and we relied on the happy hour for a social drink. The inluded wine with our meals however were very good.

See above comments. The cruise was great, liked the destinations on route. Our cabin was very comfortable and loved the floor to ceiling patio windows. Ensuite was excellent.

25th June 2018 - Mr Alan Hutchinson

This was our first ever cruise and we were a bit hesitant about what to expect. This anxiety was soon rectified when we arrived on the boat. A great reception, a great room and the whole crew, waiting staff, stateroom cleaners and cruise director were all so friendly and helpful. The whole ship was so clean and accessible. Thank you Avalon for a wonderful first experience we will be back.

The cruise was full of options. We could participate or do our own thing. To do every guided tour was a bit hectic for us old ones but we kept up. We loved the scenery.

15th June 2018 - Mr Ken Mosley

I would probably book with Avalon again, my only concern is that that they are becoming much more expensive.

The resolution of the problems with the ship were resolved quickly and efficiently. The change in programme was handled very professionally. Sadly for the second year running there was a problem with taxi at MCR airport.

6th June 2018 - Mr Stuart Potter

Everything was near enough perfect once we boarded the ship. Organisation was excellent and the whole crew was fabulous. Only downside was the flights. There are direct flights from Manchester to Prague and from Budapest back to Manchester but you organised flights with Lufthansa with changes in Frankfurt and a 4 hr+ wait in Frankfurt on the return.

The cruise was most enjoyable. The excursions were really interesting and the guides very good. Food and drink was excellent with an emphasis on local dishes to where we stopped. As mentioned before, we would have much preferred direct flights.

"Straightforward and person dealing with booking very helpful..."

Straightforward and person dealing with booking very helpful

A wonderful holiday. Prague is an amazing city and our stay at Prague Hilton amazing. Our stay on Avalon Impression was great. The captain, ships crew, and tour guides were all brilliant. The food was imaginative and delicious.Everyone always polite and very helpful. The musical excursions in Prague and Vienna were wonderful; great fun. Also the on board entertainment good especially the Bavarian Devils. Cruise director was very knowledgeable and friendly but could have been more concise in his delivery of information. Also although cabins were really comfortable it would have been good to have a kettle in room. Transfer from home to Heathrow and Prague airport to ship all went very smoothly. However, on the last day although we had followed labelling and placing of luggage to the letter we discovered about an hour before our transfer to airport that our luggage was missing. This was a very stressful time and should not have happened if passengers had checked their own bags onto airport transfer vehicle. When your reception staff realised what had happened they eventually tracked our luggage and it was placed at Avalon arrivals desk for our collection. They were very apologetic and did all they could to solve the problem. But it should NOT have happened if correct procedures were followed!!!!! In hindsight it would have been better if we had had an earlier pick up time as at 2.15 in the afternoon the traffic to the airport was horrendous and took over an hour to get there. Avalon should know what the city traffic is like and we would always prefer to be early rather than getting anxious. We loved the journey along the Danube and enjoyed seeing all the beautiful architecture in towns along the way

"They were very professional and quick to answer queries...."

15th November 2017 - Trusted Customer

They were very professional and quick to answer queries.

Excellent service - local staff vg. Two minor management gripes 1. The cost of non inclusive trips was disproportionately expensive. Yes you have a cash rich clientele on holiday but some of the prices were double what was available locally 2. Sort out tipping. We paid in advance, according to your literature this covered everybody including the Cruise Director. She (Katy - excellent) believed as she was s/e it did not include her and sent an envelope round. Unnecessary miscommunication.
