The Legendary Danube

From Prague to vibrant Budapest, this Danube river cruise holiday takes you to four countries. And the scenic beauty along the way as you cruise past quaint towns can be experienced right from your stateroom or while sipping wine atop the Sky Deck of your ship. Enjoy two nights in Prague, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Stand in front of Old Town’s medieval Astronomical Clock, which amazes as an intricate art piece and visualisation of time unlike anything else in the world. Travel to Nuremberg, Germany, to board your river cruise vessel docked on the Main Danube Canal and visit this thousand-year-old city with a Local Guide. Next, reach Regensburg, the only German city not bombed during WWII. Lovers of architecture will enjoy the many listed buildings of historic interest, and Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 CE. Passau, known for its narrow, winding streets, offers the magnificent Italian Baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In Melk, you will visit Austria’s majestic Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe’s largest monasteries, which sits high on a bluff. Take in the breathtaking views before continuing through the picturesque Wachau Valley to the romantic sounds of Vienna, the “City of Music.” Your European river cruise holiday ends in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, with guided sightseeing and free time to explore this vibrant city on your own.

Multiple itineraries are available:

Day 1 Prague

Travel to Prague where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a three night stay at the Intercontinental Prague, Hilton Prague or Andel's by Vienna House Prague (or similar).

Day 2 Prague

  • Meals included:
  • Breakfast

Included today: Guided sightseeing, see the Astronomical Clock and visit Hradcany Castle grounds.  Prague is a 1,200-year-old city preserved in time, and, unlike other Central European capitals, it was not bombed during the 20th-century wars. A local guide shows you its best-known treasures, such as the Old Town’s Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 and once the envy of all of Europe; Hradcany Castle grounds; St. Vitus Cathedral; and the Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague. Browse the shops for hand-cut crystal or art books and stroll through the Christmas markets. Rows of brightly decorated wooden huts sell Christmas tree ornaments, wooden toys, and Czech handicrafts. Get a little inner warmth with a cup of svarene vino (hot mulled wine) and a traditional hot sausage from one of the stalls. The beautifully decorated tree in the Old Town is an impressive sight.

Day 3 Prague

  • Meals included:
  • Breakfast

Enjoy a free day to explore at your own pace and visit the Christmas markets. Perhaps visit the Communist Museum, sample local plum dumplings and Pilsner, or stroll along the Vltava River. Your Cruise Director will have suggestions for things to do.

Straightforward and person dealing with booking very helpful

A wonderful holiday. Prague is an amazing city and our stay at Prague Hilton amazing. Our stay on Avalon Impression was great. The captain, ships crew, and tour guides were all brilliant. The food was imaginative and delicious.Everyone always polite and very helpful. The musical excursions in Prague and Vienna were wonderful; great fun. Also the on board entertainment good especially the Bavarian Devils. Cruise director was very knowledgeable and friendly but could have been more concise in his delivery of information. Also although cabins were really comfortable it would have been good to have a kettle in room. Transfer from home to Heathrow and Prague airport to ship all went very smoothly. However, on the last day although we had followed labelling and placing of luggage to the letter we discovered about an hour before our transfer to airport that our luggage was missing. This was a very stressful time and should not have happened if passengers had checked their own bags onto airport transfer vehicle. When your reception staff realised what had happened they eventually tracked our luggage and it was placed at Avalon arrivals desk for our collection. They were very apologetic and did all they could to solve the problem. But it should NOT have happened if correct procedures were followed!!!!! In hindsight it would have been better if we had had an earlier pick up time as at 2.15 in the afternoon the traffic to the airport was horrendous and took over an hour to get there. Avalon should know what the city traffic is like and we would always prefer to be early rather than getting anxious. We loved the journey along the Danube and enjoyed seeing all the beautiful architecture in towns along the way

"They were very professional and quick to answer queries...."

15th November 2017 - Trusted Customer

They were very professional and quick to answer queries.

Excellent service - local staff vg. Two minor management gripes 1. The cost of non inclusive trips was disproportionately expensive. Yes you have a cash rich clientele on holiday but some of the prices were double what was available locally 2. Sort out tipping. We paid in advance, according to your literature this covered everybody including the Cruise Director. She (Katy - excellent) believed as she was s/e it did not include her and sent an envelope round. Unnecessary miscommunication.

"Everything was outstanding except for the 'Pick up from Home' and the return journey. On Pick-up..."

2nd October 2017 - Mr Charles Pollard

Everything was outstanding except for the 'Pick up from Home' and the return journey. On Pick-up from home on 16 Sept, despite the directions I had given for the driver to find my house down a track, he had not looked at them and so I went out into the road at 5.30 am and found him just sitting there in the car in the middle of the road 150 metres down the road, seeming helpless! He had'nt a clue on reading my instructions. and said he had not seen them! Then, despite him knowing the Heathrow area well - when finding congestion and trying to take us a back way in (very good) - we then found more congestion just short of the Airport. Because the traffic was hardly moving, my wife and I offered to walk the last bit (we are good walkers) which he said would be fine and take 10 minutes.... except it was impossible to walk to Terminal 3 because, unbeknown to us, it required walking through the Heathrow Tunnel under the Runway, with no footpath! We had to get on a Heathrow Bus on another local road, arriving at Term 3 40 minutes later (but still in time to book in). Basically the Driver had been overtly keen to get us out of his car, no doubt to get his breakfast early, and obviously was not concerned to get his passengers delivered properly to the right Terminal! On the return journey on 26 Sept, the (another) driver was there but waiting in the wrong place - again, he had not bothered to look at the instructions of where the VIP car company usually met Avalon Customers! Neither of these tings were a big deal because of our (the customers) preparedness and planning! But it seems there is a complete mis-communication with the Drivers used!! What is the point of giving guidance to Drivers if they do not read it, even if it is passed on to them by the VIP taxi company!

"Customer service was excellent. Your rep Stephanie went out of her way to keep..."

24th September 2017 - Mrs Elizabeth Lee

Customer service was excellent. Your rep Stephanie went out of her way to keep me informed about flights, the cruise and hotels. We couldn't have asked for more. In my opinion sh went above and beyond to make sure we were satisfied, always very pleasant and polite. An asset to you, for sure.

Our first time on a river cruise, we were very impressed with the whole experience.

"Superb service, excellent side trips, well-worth while."

22nd September 2017 - Trusted Customer

An aspect we had not appreciated was that the first three days of the cruise were along the Main-Danube canal, not the Danube. This meant no access to the top deck/sky platform, with attendant loss of views. The Prague stay was excellent. The cruise really should also allow for more time in Budapest, again a magnificent location.

First-rate shore visits and optional extras.

"Above Expectations"

1st September 2017 - Trusted Customer

Everything happen as detailed, very hard working team

Excellent choice very happy with the itinerary and the crew and all the staff absolutely 1st class. The only unexpected downside was having to pay the hotel bellboys money to store the cases awaiting our airport transfer. Now looking at next year brochure to book again. Please thank everyone for an unforgettable holiday

"Best holiday for many years."

22nd August 2017 - Mr Michael Grout

From start to finish Avalon displayed attention to detail, nothing was too much trouble, the cabin was kept spotless, the food was wonderful and having included wine etc was very welcome. My first river cruise will not be my last. Thank you Avalon for a great holiday.

Fantastic value for money, especially as we booked late at a very good discount.
