Paris to Normandy

This fabulous river cruise combines time in France’s unparalleled capital of Paris with beautiful scenery along the Seine River and the picturesque and historical region of Normandy.

Embark on your adventure in Paris and sail to Vernon, where you’ll choose between two exciting guided visits—Claude Monet’s stunning gardens at Giverny or the remarkable Bizy Castle, known as “Normandy’s Versailles.” You may choose to go on an excursion to the historic Normandy Landing beaches, including Omaha Beach, the Point du Hoc monument, and the American Cemetery. In Rouen, best known as the home of Joan of Arc, you’ll go on a guided walk through the medieval quarter and visit the Gothic Rouen Cathedral—once the tallest building in the world. From Conflans, go on an excursion to the quaint and inspiring town of Auvers-Sur-Oise—associated with several famous artists, including Vincent van Gogh—or visit Napoleon and Josephine’s Malmaison.

On this French river cruise, you’ll enjoy wine, cheese, beautiful scenery along the Seine River, and stops in charming and historical parts of France, but your adventure would not be complete without some time in Paris—one of the world’s most romantic and vibrant cities! The “City of Light” has Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre Museum with its elegant glass pyramid contrasting its ancient architecture. A guided walk through the historic Île St. Louis with its narrow streets, and Île de la Cité where medieval Paris was founded, will be a delight.

Staff on board were excellent, the food was very varied and of very good quality, the organisation was outstandingly good on board.

Everything from home pickup to return to home was excellent and better than we could have hoped for. The tour director Tony was excellent and helped make the holiday the great success that it was.

24th April 2018 - Trusted Customer

Big disappointment was the FIVE hours between landing in Paris and reaching the ship. We were met in arrivals then four of us were taken on a 10 minute walk across the terminal and asked to sit on chairs until the person who met us went to find two more arrivals. He didn't return for 45 minutes, then six of us were driven by coach to another terminal to pick up two more passengers. Then the coach, with only eight on board, went to a hotel (another 45 minutes journey) where we had to wait another hour before being driven to the ship - a longer than scheduled drive because the ship had to moor at St Denis. Surely the original four passengers could have gone straight to the ship by taxi from the airport (one hour) rather than spend a total of five hours after landing. I realise staterooms are not available until 4pm but on the day we disembarked large groups of new passengers were coming on board as we came out of breakfast and were able to use the ship's lounge, sun deck etc. from 9am. Some of the service in the restaurant left a little to be desired. Meals were given to the wrong passenger several times by our waitress and when two or more people on a table ordered steaks she had no idea which was medium rare, which well done etc and guests had to cut into them and swap them around as necessary. For some meal choices three spoons were required (aperitif, soup and dessert) but only two were provided. On the first occasion this happened I asked for a third spoon and she brought one but on the next occasion she took the USED spoon from the aperitif dish before taking the dish away and put it back on the table for me to use for dessert! Bar service was also slow at times before dinner. On the plus side housekeeping was excellent with efficient and friendly staff and the crew, from captain down, were a joy to meet. Staterooms were of a high standard. Tours were very good with very professional guides and the overall experience was a very enjoyable holiday with an excellent friendly atmosphere on board. Food was very good but the only bacon available at breakfast every day was streaky and done to a crisp! Surely lean bacon should be an option at this level.

Most staff went out of their way to ensure everyone had an enjoyable holiday and succeeded. Comfort and cleanliness on board were excellent. Criticisms made above could easily have been rectified with better service between airport and ship and some staff training in the restaurant.

"Yes..."

2nd November 2017 - Mr Michael Ingamells

Yes

Enjoyed every minute and the company of other travellers. The only complaint I have is that although we were given vouchers to cover gratuities for crew and cruise director, the disembarkation letter, suggested that our voucher was not relevant to her.

"When booking extra days in Paris, we were given the name of a hotel. We..."

24th October 2017 - Mrs Corinne Wykes

When booking extra days in Paris, we were given the name of a hotel. We had friends from America, also on the cruise, who then booked a hotel near to where we were staying. The hotel we were booked into was changed, but we were not informed until we received out travel documents, and we were therefore quite a far distance away from our friends.

As part of our holiday, we were told we would be met by an Avalon representative on arrival in Paris. This did not happen, which meant us waiting around for an hour and then we made our own way to the hotel. Except for my two comments it would have been a 5star review.

"First class, friendly service"

24th October 2017 - Mrs Patricia Needham

The service was excellent, you only had to ask and it was done. The Captain was superb and so friendly, the Tour Manager was remarkable and all arrangements were first class. All the ships crew were very obliging and amicable.

The cruise was good value in comparison to other cruises I have done. Did not make any surplus purchases whilst on board.

17th October 2017 - Mr Gregory Sampson

The greeting by the Avalon Rep at the Pullman hotel was very poor indeed - unhelpful not really interested in us as customers. As a first contact with Avalon it was not a good start.

Very good - needed more time on the beaches. Guide was very knowledgeable but talked too much - name Martin.

"On our previous cruise there was an issue with air traffic controllers striking - Avalon..."

17th October 2017 - Mr Ralph Palmer

On our previous cruise there was an issue with air traffic controllers striking - Avalon pulled out all the stops to get us home - other companies might have taken the view that it was nothing to do with them. Excellent service is going the extra mile.

Did what it said on the tin. The Captain of the Tapestry 2 was a star - and the crew responded by providing exemplary service. Jerome, our cruise director, was one of the best.
