The booking team were very helpful, knowledgeble and efficient in handling my initial approach and subsequent booking.

The actual cruise was excellent with a great Cruise Director. Sadly the home pick and airport transfers were poorly organised. We were awoken 45 minutes ahead of our pick up time as the Driver had not been made aware of the revised pick up time despite Avalon confirming all the revised details to my wife 2 days before travel. We were then expected to await the arrival of two incoming flights before transfer to our hotel in Vienna. As this was likely to be in excess of an hour we insisted on an immediate transfer which was eventually agreed. On our return home there was no driver waiting for us and it took 3 calls before transport home was eventually secured over an hour after arrival. Must do better!!!!!!!!

Very enjoyable experience.

"The staff were all very friendly and helpful, which is great but we were told..."

28th May 2017 - Trusted Customer

The staff were all very friendly and helpful, which is great but we were told when be bought the cruise and when we first arrived in Vienna that all gratuities were included. However, the second day of the cruise, envelopes were put through our door with notes about how much was recommended to pay for gratuities. I am sure many people felt obliged to pay up. If you have a selling point then that should be it. If people want to give a particular waiter, for instance, an extra tip, that should be between them and them alone!

The trip was enjoyable - we loved the places we visited and the ship was very comfortable and the food of good quality and staff very helpful, as I already said. BUT there were quite a few things that we did not think were as good as we would have expected. We found the whole thing on the cruise part too regimented (we are used to organizing our own holidays), We did not like on the boat that dinner was at 7pm sharp, no leeway. We also found it annoying that we had paid for a room with panoramic views but on most occasions we were moored next to another ship so could see nothing when in dock and had to keep our curtains drawn as we were facing other cabins (also with floor to ceiling windows!). We also felt very rushed on the last day of the cruise part. We had to have our bags outside our cabins at 7.30 sharp. We had to leave the boat at 9 am (so a quick breakfast) and were taken immediately for a tour all morning. BUT when we got to our hotel we still couldn't check in until 3.30pm. The guided tour was a bit of a waste because we could not get orientated as we hadn't even been to our hotel! This did not make us feel like valued guests but just that we needed to be dumped so the next cruise to get underway as quickly as possible. For the amount we paid, I think this last bit was unacceptable. Also when we first arrived at the airport in Vienna, we all had to wait over an hour, just standing, with no refreshment or anything, as the guide was waiting for another flight. Surely the company could afford enough transport to have taken us to our hotel and come back for the others - it was not that far! There was nowhere to sit down, it was hot and tiring and some more elderly people were getting extremely tired! So although there were good parts to the trip and it certainly was well organized (too much for our liking but that is just us), I think there is a lot of room for improvement for a 'luxury' cruise!

"well organised"

Well organised operation

Overall good, disappointing hotel location in Budapest

"Great holiday spoilt by poor customer services by the hotel."

28th May 2017 - Trusted Customer

The service as a whole was excellent. The cruise director Anjun (sorry for the selling) was outstanding. The crew were amazing. One young lady that stood out was called Kami. She always seemed tone there. Always ready with another drink and really engaging with the passengers. She has a permanent smile which is genuine and a real sense of fun. there were several older ladies on the cruise who were unaccompanied and she went out of her way to involve them, getting them up to dance and have some fun. Really impressed with her. The ONLY negative I have is the arrival at Budapest... We were asked to have our bags outside our staterooms at 07:30 and did not see them again until we could check into the hotel. The hotel was not ready for us until 15:30hrs and we 'wasted' half a day waiting for rooms. Two elderly ladies asked if there was somewhere they could rest and were told but the hole they had a lounge they course use for 69 euros each. This was a very poor display of customer services by the Hilton hotel having kept us waiting for several hours.

Expensive holiday but worth it
