With its untamed forests, golden beaches and mist-shrouded mountains, Bulgaria is a small Balkan country of seductive charms. One of the first places you’ll visit on a Danube River cruise is the town of Vidin. The town’s medieval fortress, ‘Baba Vidin’, once protected the city during the Middle Ages, and is now a fortress museum and the town’s primary landmark. On from Vidin is the town of Belogradchik, with its unusual natural rock formations, and the fortress that makes use of this unique wonder on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Once the ancient capital of Bulgaria, the city of Veliko Târnovo is now a picturesque university town. Places of interest include Tsarevets Hill, home to the Royal Fortress and Patriarch’s Church. Only 4km away from the town is the village of Arbanassi, with a great number of historical monuments to visit, including the Church of Nativity Christ and the Monastery of St Nicholas.
